He was predeceased by: his mother Mary Cecelia Kailing; his granddaughter Teresa Lee; his former wife Lucy Switzer; his siblings, Carolyne, Larry, Karen Fetterley and James Fetterley; and his father Wilbur.
He is survived by: his wife Carol Wells Scheid; his children, Terry Kailing (Janet) of Grand Rapids, Anthony Kailing (Connie) of Marne and Thomas Kailing (Sharon) of Marne; his stepchildren, Karen Ottobre (Don), Patricia Esper, Kathryn Rosinski (Norman), David Scheid (Jackie Holmes), Diane Montague and Jerilyn Taylor (Brent); and his sisters, Maryrose Thebo and Sharon Toogood (Jeff). He is also survived by five grandchildren; eleven step grandchildren; twelve step great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Monday, April 21st 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Tuesday, April 22nd 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. Mary Catholic Church (1009 Marion Ave, Big Rapids, MI 49307). A rosary was held on Monday, April 21st 2025 at 6:30 PM at the same location. A Mass was held on Tuesday, April 22nd 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
Memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name to St. Mary – St. Paul Catholic Church.
