He was predeceased by : his wife Essie Mae Gathing; his parents, Isaiah Gathing and Blanchard of Louisiana; and his siblings, Guss Gathing, Willie L Gathings, Amber Morrow and Johnnie Morrow.

He is survived by : his children, Ambree Gathing, Doris Gathing of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Gene Gathing Jr. (Jacqueline), Keith Gathing (Kristiye) of Detroit and Kenneth Gathing (Zelma) of South Bend, Indiana; his grandchildren, Anthony McCoy of Benton Harbor, Alvin Noah Thomas Gathing of Detroit, Michigan, Brittney Gathing of Benton Harbor, Temesha Gathing of Grand Rapids and Kenniya Gathing of Austin, Texas; his great grandchildren, Kynnadi, Mason, Spencer, Jevaryon Jr., Kamryn and Zuri; his brothers, Ernest L Gathing, Robert Morrow, Houston Morrow (Sarah), Clifton Morrow, Clarence Morrow (Ronita) and Henry J Morrow; and his friend Wyomia Norris. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation was held on Friday, June 21st 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Highland Avenue Seventh Day Adventist Church (2075 Highland Ave, Benton Harbor, MI 49022). A funeral service was held on Friday, June 21st 2024 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Friday, June 21st 2024 at the Crystal Springs Cemetery (1655 E Napier Ave, Benton Harbor, MI 49022).
