Richard Thomas Shelagowski Obituary

Richard Thomas Shelagowski, a man whose heart was as golden as the memories he leaves behind, passed away peacefully in Bay City, Michigan, on January 21, 2025, with his loving family by his side. Born on September 11, 1950, in the same close-knit community he would call home for his entire life, Richard was the cherished son of the late Donald and Leona (Olszowy) Shelagowski.

Richard's life was one of devotion and service, hallmarked by the love he shared with Mary Girard, whom he married on July 11, 1980, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bay City. Their 44 years of marriage were filled with laughter, support, and an unbreakable bond. Together, they raised a family that included their children, Roger Shelagowski and Melanie (Art) Dennison Jr., and their adored grandchildren, Arthur III, Alyssa, Morgan Dennison, Emma Sauer, and Dalton Shelagowski. Richard also leaves behind his caring siblings, Janet (Tom) Bridges, Patricia (Randy) Genshaw, and Randy Shelagowski. His life was touched by the loss of his first wife Marjorie (Badour) Shelagowski, his daughter Melissa Shelagowski, his brother Roger Shelagowski, a niece Sara Quinn, and his in-laws Francis and Katherine Girard, as well as his brother-in-law Jim Durm.

A patriot at heart, Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a testament to his selfless character. Following his military service, he embarked on a career with General Motors, dedicating 32 years before retiring. His work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident to all who knew him.

Richard's zest for life was infectious, and his interests were as robust as his personality. An avid motor enthusiast, he spent countless hours rebuilding motors, working on cars, and attending swap meets and car shows. He loved taking spontaneous trips to the Mackinaw Bridge, enjoying the journey as much as the destination. His favorite haunts included the Fall Inn Bar for a slice of pizza that was as satisfying as his company. Richard's passion for the open road was fulfilled with the roar of his Harley and the purr of his Chevelle, symbols of his free spirit and love for adventure.

Above all, Richard was a family man. His greatest joy was found in the laughter and achievements of his children and grandchildren. He was the kind of person who never hesitated to lend a helping hand, embodying the essence of selflessness. His friendly demeanor made him a beloved figure in his community and amongst friends.

Richard will be remembered as a man who lived life to the fullest, with a loving heart and a generous spirit. His legacy is one of kindness, a reminder that life's simplest pleasures are its most precious. As we reflect on his life, we find comfort in knowing that Richard Thomas Shelagowski touched many lives, and his memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, January 27, 2025, at 2 pm from the Rivertown Funeral Chapel with military funeral honors, with inurnment at a later date. Friends may visit at the chapel on Monday, from 10 am until time of service. The family would like to thank Bay City Comfort Care for the compassionate care given to Richard and his family.
