He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo O'Brien and Mary O'Brien (Garland). He is survived by: his wife Mary Elizabeth; his sister Patricia O'Brien of Virginia; his children, Stephen O'Brien (Marie) of Clifton, VA, Michael O'Brien of Orlando, FL, Eileen Curtis (Eric) of Bay City, MI and Claire Cottrell of Aberdeen, NC.; and his grandchildren, Marc Curtis (Christa), Kelli Curtis-Ryder (Chris), Alicia Bonner (Sean), Colleen O'Brien, Matthew O'Brien and Timothy Caldwell. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
