He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Shive and Roberta Shive (Behlke); his stepfather Anson H. Brown; his granddaughter Kiersten Shive-Stewart; his brother Bill; and his cousin Behlke.

He is survived by: his spouse Anna Mae Gauss; and his children, Cathy, Jones of Augusta, Cindi Shepard of Battle Creek and Richard Shive (Shelley) of Battle Creek. He is also survived by grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; four sisters, Angela Norton, Jean Millsap, Robin Woods and Tina Burton and by three brothers.
