He was predeceased by: his parents, Ferdinand Merkel and Mary Merkel (Young); his sister Gertrude "Dot" Mennick; and his daughter-in-law Heidi Merkel. He is survived by: his wife Barbara (Collins); his children, Sara Bonesteel (Jonathan) of Ann Arbor, William R. Merkel of Arlington, VA, Dr. Edward T. Merkel (Aleza) of Canton, MI and Howard M. Merkel (Michaele) of Ann Arbor; his brother D. Patrick Merkel (Sandra) of Chelsea; and his siblings-in-law, James Collins (Florence) of Florida and Patricia Collins of Ohio. He is also survived by nine grandchildren.
