Emma Burger lit a candle

“I'm so sorry for your loss from the bottom of my heart. I've known Max for a couple years, but we really became good friends over the last couple months, and I'm so grateful for that. He knew I had gone to residential mental health treatment for bipolar, and was so incredibly generous with his time, knowledge and care. He had such a gift for making people feel not alone in their struggles. I'll carry all the wisdom he shared with me the rest of my life. As he told me, "just gotta ride the wave"”

“Max has been an integral part of a community which I am grateful for. This is a fellowship I have found no other place. It is the beautiful weirdos, the creative and a couple clicks off of mainstream folks which make this community what it is. I love Max to the max, and it is so hard to imagine that smile and outspoken lovely wit not being put forth by our dear friend. Let us hold Max in the light and save a space for him in our hearts. Peace and blessings to all who were able to know him…”

Logan Gardner wrote a sympathy message

“Through kismet I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to join the group of wise, silly, and loyal recovery-based crew known as The Ride. Like my good friend Spense, I met Max in the early days of recovery, and l found his humor, charisma and insight to be uplifting and profound. Max, you are one of the kindest and smartest people I know. The time I got to know you brought me joy and laughter and perspective which will last for many years to come. Thank you for everything, love you miss you”

Spenser Robnett wrote a sympathy message

“I met Max at an AA meeting when I had less than 24 hours sober. He gently approached me after the meeting and comforted me, as if I was a part of his own family. Max would quickly become one of my favorite people on Earth, and a role model I could always turn to. I was fortunate enough to join “The Ride”, a support group for intrepid travelers, dissecting an album at a time with dumb impersonations and bad improv bits. I hope to live life with an ounce of his humor and enthusiasm. Love ya chippi”

“I lived with Max for many years. From transitional housing to sharing an apartment together. He was a fundamental pillar in the start of my recovery. We would share a monthly meal (mainly Indian food). He was a dear friend of mine that I was lucky enough to have met and shared so many meals, conversations and memories. I have much love for Max and will miss my friend. My deepest condolences to the family. PS- all my photos of max involve food and him being weird. Here’s a photo of him reading my kid a bedtime story after a nice meal. -Nikhil”

“Of all the guys I've driven to meetings, only one ever turned it into an event. Debating Cole/Kendrick/Drake, improvising characters, silly voices, talking recovery, talking trash, sharing music; Max was the driving force behind The Ride & the friendships it forged. When I left Ann Arbor, The Ride didn't stop. It went virtual. Our shenanigans persisted across 6 time zones. Now in spirit, The Ride keeps on. Max, I love you dear friend. Thanks for the continued laughs & smiles.”

“I got to know Max in 2023. He always had a love for biking, adventure, and good food. He had such a fun-loving spirit, amazing sense of humor, and a deeply kind heart. He provided such kind love, comfort, and support to me when my dad died, and I will always remember that. All my love to his family.”

Bobby Marks wrote a sympathy message

“I sponsored Max for 6-7 years and Max brought so much love and joy into my life. We would talk on the phone for hour about everything from dating, to bad movies, to our favorite peleton instructors and kept each other accountable to our training programs for our next triathlon. He helped start and establish a Monday night meeting that regularly sees 60-70 people attend it and will be deeply missed in our community. I love Max and I will miss him so much. 🖤”
