He was predeceased by: his wife Leslie Jean Sass. He is survived by: his brother Dale S. Sass (Idelle Hammond-Sass); his son Casey Sass of Austin, Texas; and his siblings-in-law, Laurie McLure and Jeff Houghton (Sandy).
His contributions to the field are visible from the entrance to the Detroit Zoo to many major planning efforts in Detroit, from the Kellog Foundation Headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan to design collaborations with Albert Paley in Rochester, New York.
