He was predeceased by: his father Walter Szymanski; his wife Ruth Wilke; his stepson Ralph Tverberg; and his brother Thomas Szymanski. He is survived by: his children, Donald Szymanski, Karen Kobus (Michael), Debra Kudla (Lawrence), Keith Szymanski (Valerie), David Szymanski and Kenneth Szymanski (Cynthia); his stepchildren, Carol Catron (David) and Keith Tverberg (Noreen); and his brother William Szymanski (Carol). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.
