He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Smith and Amy Smith (Allen); his grandson Chad Chestnut; his sister Hilda; his brother-in-law Clare Ashley; his brother Kenneth; and his sister-in-law Irene Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Henrietta Alice Holthof; his daughters, Janis Chestnut (Harry) of Allegan, Debbie Haas (Donald) of Allegan, Robin Clark (Gary) of Allegan and Susan Smith Bunn of Allegan; his grandchildren, Andrew Chestnut (Brady) of Allegan, Amy Chestnut (Josh Gillons) of Allegan, Holly Wagner (Todd) of Allegan, Brian Haas (Sara) of Rockford, Ben Haas (Kelsea) of Allegan, Kimberlee Nichols (Greg) of Allegan, Alan Clark (Erin) of Kalamazoo, Jennifer Clark (Seth Jadin) of Allegan, Nicholas Bunn of Otsego, Lucas Bunn of Detroit and Zachary Bunn of Traverse City; and his great grandchildren, Maddison, Carter, Carson Wagner, Harvey Chestnut, Jameson, Asher Gillons, Ella, Rory Haas, Jentry, Ryder Haas, Baylor Nichols, Hunter, Hailey Clark, Sawyer, Josephine Jadin, Emery and Moria Bunn. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Basil had been to the Allegan County Fair every year until this year when it was canceled due to the pandemic.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Wings of Hope Hospice and Wings Home, 530 Linn Street, Allegan, MI 49010 are suggested.
