He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Humes and Charlie Brown; his wife Myrtle Brown; his children, Linda, Barbara of Albion and Curtis of Lansing; his siblings, Sadie, Rev. Edward and Rev. Ben; and his son Chad Smiley.
He is survived by: his children, Allen, Raven (Nina) of Lansing, Doris (Paul), Victor (Carol) of Albion and Ray of Jackson; and his friend Henderson "Schoolboy" Harris. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
