She was predeceased by: her parents, John P. Kramar and Karin Kramar (Edstrom); her husband Clifford Lawrence Tengelsen of Tengelsen's Pharmacy; and her sister Karin Ruth Eldredge (Kramar). She is survived by: her daughters, Leslie Ann Tengelsen (Leo Hennessy) and Jana Maria Dost (John); and her grandson Jake Dost.

Joan survived the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, but could not escape dementia and old age.
