He was predeceased by: his siblings, Roy B. Potter, Jr., Dick Potter and Barbara Hodgkins; and his granddaughter Sara Potter. He is survived by: his parents, Roy B. and Mildred M. Potter (Smith); his wife Marsha J. Potter of Edgecomb; his sons, Frank H. Creamer of Edgecomb, Roy D. Potter (Karen) of Edgecomb and John E. Potter Jr.; his wife Erin of Newcastle; and his daughters, Beth Jordan (Clayton) of Whitefield and Tina Lear (Bob) of Whitefield. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, one great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
