He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter E. Johnston and Mildred Johnston (Murphy); his brother Merle; his sister-in-law Mable Johnston; his sister Phyllis Schaefer; and his son-in-law Greg Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce O. Johnston of Presque Isle; his daughter Stephanie "Taffy" Smith of St. Augustine, FL; his grandchildren, Zach Smith (Alisha) of Presque Isle and Kylan Smith of New York, NY; his great grandchildren, Lydia Smith of Presque Isle, Camrynn Smith of Presque Isle and Gregory Herschel Smith of Presque Isle; and his niece Anne Theriault (Rosaire Jr.) of Fort Fairfield.
