He was predeceased by: his parents, George Verrill and Shirley Bates Lowell of Greenwood; his sister Millie Chaloux; and his daughter Dawn Bates. He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth Bates of Otisfield; his brothers, Leslie Bates Jr. of Turner and Michael Bates of Maine; his children, Robert Bates Jr. (Mary Bates) of Dixfield, Shannon Bates (Christie Bates) of Rumford and Shelly Boynton (Cliff Boynton Jr.) of Livermore Falls; and his granddaughter Tammy Thomas (Shane Thomas) of Otisfield.
Robert was a quilt maker and many of his quilts were auctioned with the proceeds either being donated to veteran organizations or used to send care packages to active duty military personnel serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
