He was predeceased by: his parents, James Hellen and Nettie McKinley Hellen; his former wife Elizabeth; his children, Andrea and Walter McKinley; and his siblings, Donald (Thelma Hellen), Walter (Margaret Hellen), Idella Morley, Lucy (Joe McLean), Fred Hellen, Virginia (William Wadleigh) and Alice (Ralph West).
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Hellen (McKinley); his children, Joanne Hellen of La Grande, OR., Julie Little of Epping, N. H., Jody Deshais (Bill) of Freedom, N. H., James McKinley (Marilyn) of Poland and Robert McKinley (Debbie) of Mechanic Falls; his brother Jim Hellen (Carly); and his sister-in-law Susie Hellen. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
