He was predeceased by: his parents, Pearl Height-Fairfield and Margaret Gardner (Ackley); his wife Sarah Jane; and his siblings, Perley, Ruth, Myles, David, Hazel, Grace and Clarence "Happy" Gardner.
He is survived by: his children, Michael Gardner (Michelle) of Machias and Mary Lou McGuire (Mark) of Cutler; his grandchildren, Mark "Skip" McGuire, Jr. (Natalie) of Cutler, Dean McGuire (Teresa) of East Machias, Benjamin Gardner (Stephanie) of Cutler and Ashlee Bourgoin (Eric) of Frenchville; his great grandchildren, Peyton McGuire, Jackson Scoville, Jocelyn Scoville, Jarrett McGuire, Sara Jane McGuire, Clay Gardner and Autumn Bourgoin; and his close friend Carla Webster of East Machias.
