He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald L. Simpson and Patricia A. Ehrig-Simpson. He is survived by: his wife Julia Fleming Simpson; his stepson Brandon Jellison (Ugne Aleknaite-Jellison); his stepgrandchildren, Vytautas and Saule; his stepchildren, Lucas Jellison (Hannah Corkum) and Kyle Jellison (Moriah Jellison); his stepgrandchildren, William and Hannah; his siblings, Gary Simpson (Jan Reichert), Samantha Cambron and Stacy Frizzle-Edgerton (Jonathan Edgerton); and his nieces, Daphne Frizzle, Juliet Frizzle, Violet Frizzle and Mia Clark (Neil Genel).

Don retired in 2020 during the pandemic yet couldn't stay away from helping others and went back to volunteer at the hospital.

He was a long-time trainer who mentored new & current employees on how to assist Veterans in gaining access to service-connected benefits. I admired Don's ability to be a good listener and encourager to all those who crossed his path. Countless Veterans have benefited from his service at VA and I consider myself blessed to call him a friend.”
