He was predeceased by: his parents, Lorenzo Nickens and Grace Nickens (Price); his siblings, Mervin Christian, Dolly Jean Nickens, Alice Alsup (Alene), Martha Tilghman and Violet Roy; his grandson Travis D. Kennedy; and his stepdaughters, Barbara "Bop" Burke and Lavonda Rodgers-Roy.
He is survived by: his former wife Bessie Valarie Johns; his wife Mary Liggon of Baltimore, MD.; his children, Rennie, Jo Armstrong (Larry), Maude Kennedy (Howard), Joseph Jr. Nickens (Norma), Theodore Nickens and Grace Stripling (Hosea); his siblings, Percy Nickens (Belinda) and Marlene Pollard; his aunts, Adele Parker and Lena Campbell; his stepdaughters, Lisa Cole (Angelo) and Erika Rodgers; and also Bessie. He is also survived by five step grandchildren, four step great grandchildren; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
