He was predeceased by : his parents, John Fergus and Susan Garvey (McGennity); his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Browne; his son John Brendan Garvey; and his siblings, Thomas Garvey, Margaret Rose Lund, Kevin Garvey, Raymond Garvey and Ann Brigid Lauffer.

He is survived by : his siblings, Brendan Garvey and Suzanne Buckmann; his children, Matthew (Emily Severance), Maura Kohlhafer (Donald), Peter Garvey (Laurie), Elizabeth Garvey and Stephen Garvey (Gina); and his grandchildren, Emilia Packard (Errol), Michael Garvey (Jessica), Tess Garvey (Mohammad), Allison Garvey (Zach), Madeleine Garvey (Joe), Christopher Kohlhafer (Katie), Elizabeth Doody (Bill), Margaret Wilkinson (Aaron), Amanda Gribbin (Bobby), Joshua Garvey, Kathryn Garvey, Brando Quagliano and Cesare Quagliano. He is also survived by sixteen great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 16th 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. John the Baptist Church (12319 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20904). A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, July 16th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the same location.

In 1985, he received the William M. Kennedy award from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers for his contributions to the ship repair and shipbuilding industry.
