He was predeceased by: his parent Norman E. Smith; his wife Mary Lou Burbage Smith; and his nephew Jeffrey M. Smith. He is survived by: his parent Mildred H. Smith; his former wife Constance Cooper Smith; his children, Bruce E. Smith (Ellen) and Holly S. Foster (Keith); his grandchildren, Brian E. Smith (Kelsey), Emily E. Smith, Allison E. Foster and Claire H. Foster; his brother William; and his nephews, Kenneth H. Smith, Robert Willing, Steven Willing and Michael Willing.
