He was predeceased by: his parents, George W. Abernathy and Novella Johnson Abernathy. He is survived by: his wife Oglivia Hackley Abernathy; his sons, Dr. Thomas Abernathy, Jr. (Yasmeen) and Dr. Troy Abernathy (Kirstie); his sister Georga A. Abernathy Jackson Davis; his grandchildren, Christian, Cole and Cora; his niece Monica; and his nephew Derek. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and special friends.
