He was predeceased by: his parents, Patrick Francis Carew and Josephine Harty; his wife Una; his brothers, Billy, Jim and Ray Carew; and his brother-in-law Jack Heaney.

He is survived by: his uncle Moose; his children, Patti Trimpin (Andy), Colleen Marcellino (Mick) and Erin Bentrewicz (Joe); his grandchildren, Casey, Kara, Josie, Liam, Megan, Maggie, Molly and Joseph; his sister Marie Heaney; his sisters-in-law, Josephine, MaryAnne and Sandy Carew; and his nieces and nephews, Noreen, Billy, Christine, Tricia, Joanne, Jennifer, James, Lynn Anne, Kathleen, Patrick, Christopher, Steven, John and Michael.

“My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. I was a young police officer working in the Third District MPD and I had the pleasure to serve under Lieutenant "Moose" Carew in the early 1970's. He was "The Best of The Finest" that served with honor on The Metropolitan Police Department. He wore The Badge with Pride and served both his fellow officer and the citizens of Washington, D.C. to the highest standards. He will be missed by all.. RIP Moose”
