He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Jefferson and Ruth Garnett Plauger (Schwartz); and his half-brothers, George L. and Richard J. Smith. He is survived by: his wife Jeanne Faye Plauger (Jones); his children, Charles A. Plauger (Jennifer) of Woodstock, VA, Joelle E. Butler (Andre) of Hagerstown, MD and Janice M. Schofield (David) of Hagerstown, MD; and his half-sister Garnett Cappelletty of Erie, PA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; three nieces and four nephews.

“I can't say how sorry I am. This was totally unexpected to all of us. My brothers and I spent a lot of happy hours playing with our Uncle Jerry. He was only 5 years older than I, and I almost got into a fight over him once, when I told my friends he was my uncle. They said, "He can't be your uncle, he's just a kid!" "Oh yeah?" He was my dad's (Richard Smith) baby brother. (see photo) Our prayers and sympathy to Jeannie and the kids and their families, and Aunt Garnett who lost her last brother.”
