He was loved and cherished by many people including: his girlfriend Donna Althoff; his children, James J. Bates, Sr. (Laura), Donna Bates, Linda Bates and Vicki Fleishell (Richard); his stepdaughter Linda Waldhauser (Steve); his grandchildren, James J. Bates, Jr., Kenneth L. Bates, Casandra Pace (Jason), Stephen Webb, Brian Engleman (Kristen) and Brittany McGill (Dante); and his brothers, Ron Bates and Buddy Bates (Sharon). He was also cherished by 9 great-grandchildren.
