She was loved and cherished by many people including: her parents, Paul G. Daston and Marie Arhondy Daston; her siblings, Cassandra Daston of Chapel Hill, George Daston (Maryellen) of Cincinnati and Lorraine Daston (Gerd Gigerenzer) of Berlin; her nieces and nephews, Thalia Gigerenzer, Terra Shepherd, Charles and John Daston; her great-niece Athena Chan; and her great-nephews, Leif Shepherd-Milner and Leo Chan.

The family requests that no flowers be sent. Donations made in Melissa's memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or to the Southern Poverty Law Center would be most welcome.

“I was saddened to hear that Melissa now lives on in our hearts only. I met Melissa in the mid-80s at the U. of Maryland. She was an excellent teacher and well liked. We soon became Volksmarch friends, and I can’t tell you how many extra miles she drove giving me rides to and from Volksmarch and other activities when I didn’t have a car. It meant a lot. She was generous in many other ways as well, and I’ll always be grateful that she was a part of my life. With heartfelt condolences, Jenna”
