He was predeceased by: his parents, Russell M. Mathews and Lucille Titus Mathews; and his brothers, Russell, William "Gene", Raymond "Frank" and Marshall Mathews.
He is survived by: his wife Gladys Wright Mathews; his son Michael W. Mathews; his daughters-in-law, Peggy and Lisa; his daughter Melody A. Eicholtz; his sons-in-law, Kenny and Mike; his grandchildren, Kara Mirch (Dave), Kasey Ramsburg (Chris), Marisa Mathews (Tyler Haney), James Mathews II (Rachel), Tyler Whalen (Drea), Stefany Sweadner, Stacy Green (Brandon) and Rebecca Mathews (Carl); his great grandchildren, Jack, Andi, Ada, Adler, James III, Suri, Tilly, Ewan and Cason; and his siblings, Edward T. Mathews, Robert L. Mathews, Donald L. Mathews, Evelyn Kovach and Mary Jane Warrenfeltz. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
