He was predeceased by: his parents, Army Major Paul and Jeanne Yost Sr. Paul; and his wife Jan Worth. He is survived by: his children, Linda Barrand (Mark), Chip (Mary Ann), David, Lisa Galvin (Peter) and Christopher (Michelle); and his brother Larry (Jackie). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Upon his retirement from the Coast Guard, Admiral Yost was appointed as the inaugural President of The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation, where he served for 20 years. The Foundation provides scholarships to secondary school teachers, in every state and in some U.S. territories to receive a Master's degree with a focus of helping teachers to become scholars of the United States Constitution.
