He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas E. Coates and Virginia M. Gray Coates; his wife Ida M. Sullivan Coates; and his children, Frederick R. Coates, Darlene D. Engleman and Nancy J. Meacham.
He is survived by: his daughter Dale A. Smith (Ron); his grandchildren, Paul, Ron, Kevin, David and Kim; and his great grandchildren, Reece, Alexa, Mathew, Brenden, Ben, Leo and Josslyn.
