He was predeceased by: his sister Doris "Dodie" Hess; and his daughter Michele Cotton Vaughn. He is survived by: his wife Nancy Cotton of Frostburg; his son David Cotton (Maria) of Frostburg; and his grandchildren, Alyssa Cotton of Charleston, SC and David Cotton II of Frostburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the James Cotton Faculty Development Fund which was established to support the professional development of faculty in the Department of Geography at Frostburg State University.
