He was predeceased by: his parents, George C. Thomas and Virginia Creighton Thomas. He is survived by: his wife Edythe Thomas of Fishing Creek; his children, Diana Willey (Mike) of Hoopers Island and Carlton "Carlie" R. Thomas, Jr. of Golden Hill; his grandchildren, CJ Thomas and Stacey Spicer (Buzz); and his sister Melva Simmons of Fishing Creek. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
