He was predeceased by: his parents, Patrick Cooney and Evelyn Corsack Cooney; and his siblings, Theresa, Joe, Evelyn, Jean, Billy, Mary and Jerry.
He is survived by: his wife Nancy J. Neyman Cooney; his children, John D. Cooney, Jr., Brian Cooney, Vincent Cooney and Laura Jane Cooney-Estes; his stepchildren, Laura Jean Carbonetta, Margaret Ann Stanley and Arthur Lee Reynolds; and his siblings, Patrick, Dennis, Anne and Bonnie. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Elkton VFW, Newark VFW or to Mummers Museum, in care of Hicks Home for Funerals at 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921.
