He was loved and cherished by many people including: his father James George Edward; his wife Sylvia Ellen O'Dell Smith; his sons, Joseph Russell Smith Jr. (Nancy) of Lusby, George Douglass Smith (Terri) of Glen Burnie and Daniel Scott Smith (Alicia) of Davidsonville; his siblings, James "Butch" Smith (Christine) of Callao, VA, Joan Katherine Smith Brown of Virginia and Patricia Ann Smith Gaines of Virginia; his grandchildren, Rebecca, Christopher, Joshua, Nathan, Nolan and Nelson; his great grandchildren, Abigail and Ryleigh; and his sisters, Josephine Marie Smith Greenwood and Mary Ellen Smith. He was also cherished by many nieces and nephews.
