He was predeceased by: his wife Wanda; and his son-in-law Ronald. He is survived by: his daughter Margaret Petersen; his grandchildren, Conrad and Camille; and his great grandchildren, John, Jacob and Charlotte. He is also survived by his nieces and nephew.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Doctors without borders.
