He was predeceased by: his parents, John Maurice Tawes and Leila Dana Tawes; his wife Elsie McMurry Tawes; his brothers, John Pearson Tawes (Margaret Lee Nelson) and Maurice Dana Tawes (Lois Dize Tawes); and his daughter-in-law Jennifer "Jenny" Tawes.
He is survived by: his sons, George Dana Tawes (Patricia), Robert McMurry Tawes (Bonnie) and John Pearson Tawes, III; his grandchildren, John P. "Jack" Tawes, IV, Gregory D. Tawes (Jessica) and Lori B. Riggin (Adam); his great grandchildren, Kennedy Riggin, Autumn Riggin, Nathan Tawes and Lukas Tawes; his niece Stephanie Tawes Fykes (Larry); his great-niece Sarah; and his caregivers, Kendra Marshall, Laura Parks, Linda Barnes, Robin Hancock and Laird.
