With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Philip Barton Shafer of California, Maryland, born in Chevy Chase, Maryland, who passed away on October 26, 2021 at the age of 96. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Montgomery Shafer and Bertha Shafer; his son Barton Shafer; his son-in-law Thomas Ewell; and his siblings, Margaret Reeves, Montgomery Shafer, Cuthbert Shafer, Bertha Gunther and Casper Shafer.
He is survived by: his wife Mary "Louise" Trossbach Shafer; his child Gail Ewell of California, MD; his grandchildren, Adrienne Casteen (Mike) and Kimberley Ewell; his child Rea Shafer (Jane) of Mechanicsville, MD; his grandchildren, Allison Gross (Daniel) and Emily Havenstein (Jeff); his daughter Margaret Beck (Dan) of Magnolia, DE; and his grandchildren, Christopher Spalding (Kelly), Joshua Spalding (Jennifer), Paul Shafer (Carolyn) of Ridge, MD, William Shafer (Pamela) of Lakewood, CO and Hali Shafer. He is also survived by many great-grandchildren and nieces.
