He was predeceased by: his parents, John Calvin Sauer Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth Sauer (Haggenmaker); and his brother Michael Steven Sauer. He is survived by: his wife Carolyn; his children, Chelsea Elizabeth Sauer and Ethan Gregory Sauer; his granddaughter Aleycia Mariah Frazier; his niece Kimberly Hudson; and his brother Richard Duetermann.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in John's name.
