He is survived by: his wife Sheba Smith (Cleary); his son John W. Smith Jr. (Terry); his grandchildren, Michael L. Smith (Jenn) and Connie Edwards; his great grandchildren, Cheyene Doran and Dylan Smith; his stepgrandchildren, Aleysha Armstrong and Jacob Armstrong; his nieces, Donna, Nancy and Louann; and his nephew Michael. He is also survived by three great-great-grandchildren.
