He was predeceased by: his parents, Sybil Elma Groom and Shipley; his son Richard Scott Groom; and his sister Naomi Knauer. He is survived by: his sons, William D. Groom and Stephen R. Groom; his granddaughters, Elizabeth Groom and Jessica Groom; and his great grandchild Adaline Dill.
