He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter Muirhead and Kathryn Muirhead (Waterman); his sister Molly Tyler; and his former wife Patricia Ann Muirhead (Devine). He is survived by: his children, Kathryn D. Rash (George), David N. Muirhead, Jr. (Gail) and Gilbert P. Muirhead (Kim Carson); his close friend Janet Lieberman; his grandchildren, Heather Harlow, Max Rash, Kimberly Lujan, Lindsey Gonzalez and Emma Rash; his great grandchildren, Tommy Harlow and Lucy Lujan; and his brother-in-law Clare Tyler. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews.
