Lea Ellen (Pope) Meyer Obituary

Lea Ellen Meyer, age 77, passed away on July 21, 2022 following several emergency surgeries. Her daughter Lisa, son Roger and sister Patty were with her during her final days at University of MD Shock Trauma ICU, where she received excellent, compassionate care.
Lea was the oldest of five children, born in Smithfield, NC on March 1, 1945. Her childhood and teenage years alternated between MD and NC; however, following high school, she moved permanently to Maryland. Lea first studied and worked as a nurse at Suburban Hospital, then continued to reside in Bethesda as she married Gary Meyer in 1970 and together they lovingly raised Lisa and Roger, and Lea also started the first of her “family of cats”
Following Gary’s death in 2002, Lea moved to Frederick and lived the rest of her life in Frederick, where she enjoyed taking classes, volunteering at the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, reading, and continuing with her love of cats. Over the years, Lea adopted 17 cats (many rescue) , from Tigger and Mikey to Suki (who just passed away) to Karla, who is now being loved by Lea’s daughter Lisa. Lea always dressed in bright colors and she loved accessories…shoes, purses, necklaces and jewelry.
Lea was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Katie Lee Pope, brother Eddie Pope and sister Linda Grubbs.
She is survived by children Lisa Meyer (Joseph Leonard), son Roger (Cindy), sister Patty Slagle, brother Don Pope, and sister-in-law Peggy Pope, as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Lea will be in our hearts for an eternity even though she left us too soon. Lea, you were loved for your entire life and we will miss you for the rest of ours.
A celebration of Lea’s life will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at the Talley Center, 121 N. Bentz St., Frederick, MD 21701 (Street parking, then use Baker Park lower entrance, take elevator to 3rd floor).
Donations in Lea’s name may be made in Lea’s name to the Frederick County Humane Society in honor of her love of cats. (http://www.fchs.org)
