She was predeceased by: her husband Charles Shivers; her parents, Lucius Simuel and Louise Simuel (Kennedy); her son Lucas J. Briggs; and her siblings, Lonnie of Kay Frances, O. Z., Louis James, Arthur, Melvin and Gerald.

She is survived by: her children, Valeria Simuel of Cambridge, Yaarchie Simuel of Chelsea, Clara C. Payton-Scales of Taunton, Shirley K. Briggs, Poste of Revere and Lisa M. Briggs (Stephen Tyma); and her siblings, Calvin Wright, Vera Robinson, Gregory Wright, Valerie Jean Simuel and Jerome Norris. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great- grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.
