He was predeceased by: his parents, Zygmond Wagner and Nellie Wagner (Petrovich); and his brother Edward Wagner. He is survived by: his close friend Dawnette Crosby; his daughter Kasie; and his pet Duke.

“To Dawnette & Kasie ~ I am deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. JD and I worked shoulder-to-shoulder at the CMP&DC for years. He was a wonderful person - intelligent, kind, and generous. We kept in touch by email following our retirements right up to May of 2023. I knew something was amiss when my many emails went unanswered. I will miss my dear friend very much.
