He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Bates and Kathleen Bates (Sears); and his brothers, Kenneth, Douglas and Donald.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara Bates (Reid); his sons, Edward Bates III (Karen), Gary Bates (Colleen) and Wayne Bates (Kathy); and his grandchildren, Aidan, Ronan, Finn, Josh, Amanda, Angela, Tiffaney and Victoria. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren.
