Rufus Rushins Obituary

Rufus was born September 27, 1948, in Macon, Georgia, to the parentage of Iverson and Gussie Green.

He joined the United States Navy in 1966 proudly serving his country for six (6) years. After receiving an honorable discharge, he moved to Boston in 1970 where he joined the Local 6 Union and worked for Lead Abatement/Pipe Installation for over thirty (30) years as a septic removal.

Rufus Rushins known to many as "Rudii" was known for his distinct Southern Accent that everyone tried to mimic at least once in their lifetime.

Rufus's pride and joy were his family, his fashion, and serving the Lord.!!!! This Great Man had the biggest heart when it came to adults and children. He was the Godfather of Mission Hill and every neighborhood in the surrounding areas of Boston. He established and funded countless basketball tournaments for women, men, and teenagers. Rufus also mentored, coached, and supported over 500 youths and his caring heart saved a lot of lives.

In 1985, Rufus started his own Pop Warner Football Team from scratch. He purchased all the equipment and dedicated numerous hours teaching young teenagers from Mission Hill, JP and Intervale how to play football. His hard work paid off. In just two years, his team won the Championship. The League didn't give his team a Banquet, but Rufus didn't allow this to be a discouragement for their hard work; he held his own team banquet.

Rufus loved sports his favorite teams were the New York Yankees, the Oakland Raiders, the New England Patriots, the Boston Celtics, the Boston Bruins, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Tennessee Volunteers women's Basketball team.

Rudii had the upmost respect and trust of every parent, grandparent, and guardian when it came to taking their kids on various trips. The unforgettable trips included Quebec, Toronto, Montreal, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut Maryland, Baltimore, Washington, Rhode Island, Georgia, and Niagara Falls, just to name a few.

His determination to find a Basketball Tournament in another State or Country was truly remarkable. His accomplishments and Legacy will live in our hearts forever. There were three (3) agendas when it came to Rufus traveling outside of Boston: Basketball Gym; a Church in any neighborhood he found; and finally, his matching Suits and Shoes for Sunday Service. He was truly a Man of GOD.

Rufus was preceded in death by his father, Iverson Green; mother, Gussie Green; sister, Brenda; and brother, Eddie.

Rufus was escorted home by his earthly angels on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.
