He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy E. Johnston and Ethel G. Johnston (Wells); his son Merle Jr.; and his siblings, Glen Johnston and Bellveretta Farmer.
He is survived by: his wife Joan B. Madigan; his children, Joanne (Evanthea) of Dracut, MA, Craig (Patricia) of Plympton, MA and Carolyne (Robert) of Germany; and his siblings, Betty Ruston, Beverly Smithey and Charles (Mary).
