He was predeceased by: his parents, Martin Joseph and Mary Whalen (Doyle); his wife Virginia Marie Whalen (Doran); and his siblings, Martin Whalen, Marie Bevacqua and Lillian Smith.
He is survived by: his friend Bob Gammons; his children, John J. "Jack" Whalen Jr. (Paula) of Dedham, Richard G. Whalen (Holly) of Randolph, James M. Whalen (Sheila) of Stoughton and Judi A. Smith (Brendan) of Squantum; and his siblings, Helen Audette of Quincy, Florence Higgins of Cape Cod, Rita O'Connell of Weymouth and William Whalen of Georgia. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
