He was predeceased by: his parents, Wendell Shepard and Marjorie Shepard (Robbins); and his sister Alisa. He is survived by: his wife Elaine Shepard; his children, Sara Shepard, Andrea Patterson and Gerry Patterson; and his brother Steven (Emily). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are kindly directed to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute to advance research at the Lank Center for Genitourinary Cancer Treatment.
