Aristedes Nickas Obituary
Aristedes (Steve) Nickas, 91, husband of Louise (Pohas) Nickas of South Hamilton, MA passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Gloucester as Aristedes N. Nickitopolous on November 28, 1930, he was the son of the late Charles and Ourania (Papatheodorou) Nickas. He was a graduate of Gloucester High School Class of 1948 and later served in the United States Navy from 1951-1955. He had a 35-year career with the New England Telephone Company spending a majority of these years as a Foreman in the Equipment Installation Department. After his retirement, Steve worked part time for a local power equipment company where he enjoyed meeting and interacting with many of the local residents.
His passion was enjoying his family and especially time with his five grandchildren who he spent many years teaching them useful lifelong skills. He was most proud of his grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to attend all their extra-curricular activities and share in their academic and career achievements. Steve loved entertaining family and friends at his annual Greek Easter celebration, which included cooking lamb over an open fire on his homemade spit.
Steve was an enthusiastic collector and restorer of antique automobiles, a passion he passed on to his family.
He served on the Church Council of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Ipswich volunteering his time as Treasurer. In addition, he was a member of the Acacia Lodge of Masons and was a Master Mason for 65 years. Steve was also a member of the Northshore Old Car Club.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Louise whom he shared 62 years of marriage; his son Anthony A. and his wife Carolyn of Hamilton, MA; daughter Catherine Nickas Bazdanes and her husband Theodore of Gloucester, MA. Steve is also survived by his five grandchildren Kara, Steven, and Anthony Nickas; Nicholas and Christopher Bazdanes.
The Nickas family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Steve's compassionate team of caregivers who supported him and made his days brighter (Pam, Judy, Tamra, Prischillah, Patricia, Valerie, and Elena).
Visiting hours will be held in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich, MA at 10 a.m. Burial will be held in Dolliver Memorial Cemetery, Lincoln Street, Gloucester, MA.
