He was predeceased by: his spouse Marion; and his son Michael A. Dowd. He is survived by: his children, John E. Dowd III (Elizabeth) of Atlanta, GA, Thomas M. Dowd of Hawley, PA, Susan E. Cairns (Robert), Amy J. Ruppert (Stephen) and Jennifer J. Dowd of Yarmouth, ME; his siblings, Marlene Duggan (Edward) of Beverly, MA and Russell E. Dowd (Susan); and his siblings-in-law, Patricia Morency (Roland) and John L. Hayes (Sarah) of Salem, MA. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
